Where to Look

  • The bottom of corner boards, where they end just above the ground or brick ledge.
  • Window trim sills and the bottom of side casings.
  • The lowest course of siding above a roof line, where there is no kick-out flashing.
  • Door frames and garage door jambs.
  • Any board where a sprinkler head hits it every morning.

Repair, Not Always Replace

Rotted sections of trim can be cut out and replaced with PVC or composite pieces that do not rot. Siding can be patched a few boards at a time if the profile can be matched. The contractor should also find why the wood got wet, or the new piece rots the same way.
