The Town

The Handbook of Texas traces Magnolia to Mink’s Prairie, settled in the late 1840s. When the International–Great Northern Railroad came through in 1902 the town moved to the line; the railroad called it Melton, and the post office settled on Magnolia after the trees along Mill Creek. It incorporated on September 28, 1968, and had 2,635 residents in 2021. The town sits where Farm roads 1774 and 1488 meet.

Permits in Magnolia

The city says permits are required for any remodeling as well as new construction, and contractors must register with the city before they apply. Permits office: 281-356-2266, extension 7, 18111 Buddy Riley Boulevard. Weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed 12:30 to 1:30 for lunch.

Storms on Record

National Weather Service Storm Data lists penny-size hail south of Magnolia on April 19, 2015, the same afternoon 2-inch hail fell in Tomball, and nickel-size hail near Magnolia on April 24, 2020. During Hurricane Beryl in July 2024, the weather service recorded Montgomery County’s highest gust, 81 mph, at the airport in Conroe, and widespread tree damage across the county.

Outside Magnolia’s city limits, the Montgomery County offices handle permits instead.
