Common Repairs
- Battens working loose as the boards behind them move with humidity.
- Paint cracking along batten edges, letting water behind.
- Rot at the bottom of vertical boards where they meet a porch floor or the ground.
- Gaps at the top where the siding meets the soffit, open to insects.
Getting It Right
Vertical siding needs horizontal blocking or furring behind it to nail into; the contractor should say how that will be handled. The bottom edge needs clearance above soil and porch floors so it does not wick water.
