What Hail Does to a Shingle
A hailstone that hits hard enough knocks the granules off and bruises the mat underneath. The spot looks like a dark circle and feels soft when pressed. Over the next seasons the exposed asphalt dries in the sun and cracks. That is why hail damage can look minor in May and leak by the next spring.
Metal tells the story more plainly. Dents in the ridge vent, the pipe caps and the gutters show the size and direction of the stones.
From the Ground, Before Anyone Climbs
- Dents in gutters and downspouts, and in any metal on the roof you can see from the yard.
- Heaps of dark granules where the downspouts empty.
- Split or torn window screens on the side the storm came from.
- Chips in fence paint or dents in the car, which say how big the stones were.
