Why Water at the Slab Matters
The clay under Harris County houses swells when wet and shrinks in drought. Dumping a roof’s worth of water at one corner of the slab, every storm, is how that swelling becomes uneven. Downspout extensions or underground drains that carry water several feet away are cheap compared with what they prevent.
The May 8, 2023 storm that dropped hail northeast of town also flooded streets in the Tomball area within the hour, according to the weather service. Gutters sized for ordinary rain overflow in rain like that.
